Just one bumper to bumper ightmare of getting across the George Washington Bridge after a Yankee game lets out, or traveling into the Lincoln Tunnel during rush hour will make the most patient driver consider "borrowing" the E-Z Pass tag from one of the quick moving cars in the E-Z Pass lane.
There is no need to suffer such frustrations because the New York Thruway Authority has made it exceedingly easy for New York drivers to obtain an E-Z Pass device.
Order an E-Z Pass Online
All one has to do is go to the E-Z Pass website and register for the time saving device. The registration process is easy. Registrants must be prepared with the vehicle information such as year, make and model of the vehicle. Additionally, since the E-Z Pass device is funded via credit card, of course a valid credit card is necessary to complete the process.
Order the E-Z Pass via Snail Mail
Not everyone likes to order products and services through the Internet. For individuals who are uncomfortable ordering the NY E-Z Pass online, the application can be downloaded from the NY E-Z Pass website. After downloading the application, all one has to do is complete it and mail it to the Applications & Return Tags at P.O. Box 149001, Staten Island, NY 10314-9001.
Visit one of New York's E-Z Pass Offices
Individuals who prefer to carry out live person transactions can visit one of the eight office locations in order to secure an E-Z Pass in person. All locations are listed on the E-Z Pass website.
Purchase an E-Z Pass from a Local Retailer
Just in case none of the above options are viable, commuters can purchase the E-Z Pass tag from a local retail store. There are New York retailers that sell pre-packaged E-Z Pass devices with a pre-loaded limit of $25. The listing of retailers can be found on the E-Z Pass website.
One caveat with the pre-packaged tags is that the device must be registered within 48 hours of its first use.
E-Z Pass in States Other than New York
The beauty about having an E-Z Pass device is that it not only speeds the commute in traveling over the various New York bridges and tunnels, E-Z Pass is accepted in states as far north as Maine (not accepted in Rhode Island) to as far south as Virginia (yes, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel now accepts E-Z Pass). It is also as far west as Illinois (currently not accepted in Ohio).
